Negative experience: Initially went in for a broken tooth which they did fix promptly and for a reasonable price. What was concerning was the dentist then told me I needed 13 fillings and told me I had advanced gum disease and that it was gonna cost me well over 5 grand to “fix” my teeth and if I didn’t do it, I’d be getting dentures within the next few years. I rebooked and had a couple fillings done but each appointment she would add more and more to the list of supposed things I needed done. This started to seem quite far fetched so I got a second opinion elsewhere, turns out I only need 4 fillings and I DON’T have gum disease. I am appalled that they do this and have so far been getting away with it based on the other bad reviews. Imagine how many people have spent money on dental procedures they didn’t even need because of this place. Admin- I notice you respond to poor reviews by giving details of patients private records. Bear in mind that breaching confidentiality is illegal, and follow up action will be taken.

Fantastic experience: Got my dentures done here and I'm really pleased with the results, any dental work that needs to be done I highly recommend Sydneham dental clinic 100%.

Fantastic experience: Up until 3 years ago it would be fair to say that I did not look after my teeth very well. I also had an unconscious bias towards dentists in general. Suffering from acute pain in 2022 I walked into Sydenham Dental Centre and today my story is very different. Chamil is an extremely competent dentist who is reliable and respectful. The team he has around him reflect this. Because of Chamils heart centered and honest approach I have been able to trust him with quite a bit of work on my teeth including a partial plate. This has all been done within my timeframe and budget. My overall self esteem and wellbeing has improved and I highly recommend Sydenham Dental centre.

Negative experience: Dentist failed to remove root completely as part of a root canal treatment, then suggested I pay even more than the considerable amount charged initially, for them to remove the work and redo it. I particularly enjoyed the part where they assumed I just couldn't afford it (rather than understanding the objection to paying again in full to fix their own mistake) and suggested I apply for a WINZ grant. Disappointing. *Edited to add - it is pretty shocking (and I think illegal?) for you to mention details of a patient's medical history here but you seem to have no issue doing this in response to any negative review. Do better. Since we're apparently going down the path of sharing all sorts of private details, let me clarify that I never asked for this to be done for free. I suggested that it should not cost MORE than the first time to repeat a procedure that you messed up. The first appointment for a root canal is to remove the root and fill the space. The second is to cap the tooth. You did not remove the root properly before filling the tooth so a delay in capping the tooth makes no difference to this - you didn't do the job properly and should take enough pride in your work to fix your own mistakes.

Negative experience: I chose dentist because it was local. Ive never needed a filling in my life but for some reason they convinced me that I needed 3 fillings. I felt bullied into it as they sounded very sure it needed to be done. After my treatment I had tooth ache for a few weeks. I've never experienced tooth ache in my life before this appointment. Definitely don't trust this dental practice.

Fantastic experience: Very highly recommended indeed. Very good prices are combined with very good service. I am always treated with respect at Sydenham Dental, and I am always kept very well informed about what the Dentist is doing and why. Since I've been a patient at Sydenham Dental, I've become much less nervous about my dentist visits and procedures.

Fantastic experience: I have used Sydenham dental throughout my time in CHCH. I found the dental service to be professional and accommodating with appointments. The pricing for services was also competitive. I recently moved back to Ireland and requested my records which Marie immediately furnished me with.

Negative experience: Went here a few months ago for my first appointment in adulthood - I didn't feel the communication with the appointment was great and it seemed rushed. They quoted me for a bunch of work, and I went away as I needed to think about when I would be able to get it done. I ended up putting it off due to the expense and it being the end of the year so already expensive and busy. This year I have gone to a different dentist, who is baffled I was told I needed all this work as he only found one tooth in need of a minor filling. Was much cheaper overall by getting a second opinion - and now seeing there are many similar reviews I would not recommend this clinic at all. I already had really low trust for the dental industry and this has really cemented that. Admin - If you feel the need to respond to this review, please do not share my medical details online. It is inappropriate and unethical that you have been accessing peoples records to respond to Google reviews. Not on.

Fantastic experience: From the reservation process to the treatment itself, everything was incredibly smooth. Everyone was so kind and accommodating, which allowed me to feel at ease during my treatment. Although I don’t speak English, the staff used simple words that I could understand, and a Japanese dental hygienist kindly assisted with translation. Thanks to their support, I was able to undergo the treatment without any worries. Thank you so much！

Negative experience: My experience with the Sydenham Dental Center was quite frustrating. They don't respond to emails and say they haven't received them, they don't make contact as promised, and they provide a quote that they later change. Waiting times are very long. This is not the kind of service you would expect when planning to spend $10,000 on treatment. They are just not serious. So after weeks of back and forth, I decided to go elsewhere.

Fantastic experience: I really rate Sydenham Dental. I came here to have my wisdom teeth out and received the best care. The staff are friendly and helpful and Dr Chamil is the absolute best, so caring, considerate and very talented. Because they were so great with my wisdom teeth, I've come back a few times for different issues. They always charge at or below the quoted price and cosmetically, the repairs on my teeth are better than any I've had done before (chipped front tooth has always looked like a tooth with an obvious fix but after the last fix fell apart and I got Dr Chamil to fix it, it now looks like a complete tooth! Can't recommend this team enough.

Negative experience: My partner had a check up here a while back and after the quickest check up i have ever seen they told her she would need 4 fillings which was going to cost around $1000. We weren’t certain so she went to her regular dentist back in the UK who said she didn’t need any at all.

Fantastic experience: My regular dentist for many years. Have just gone back to 100% a week after all 4 wisdom teeth have been removed. Fast healing, despite me being high risk of dry socket etc (smoking and birth control) and the process.. I couldn’t believe 2 were already out so fast and I didn’t feel anything! The first thing I said afterwards was "easy breezy!". Sedation and pain relief is all sorted for you and Dr. Chamil always checks in to make sure you’re feeling okay during the procedure, he’s friendly, professional and makes you feel comfortable. You can tell he is passionate about his career. I am very sad it is so booked out I may have to go elsewhere :( Thanks so much for the great service!

Fantastic experience: Check up was cheap and thorough. When it came to my wisdom teeth all options were discussed and reasonings supplied. Also discussed what could be done for a past failed root canal. They were all friendly and I got a call the day after my wisdom teeth surgery asking how I was.

Negative experience: I would not recommend. Charged me for work I didn't need. They only do half of your mouth for dental hygienic cleans. Then ask you to come back to do the other side and make you pay for a second appointment for a job that should of been done in the same sitting. There taking advantage of low income families.

Fantastic experience: I had 4 wisdom teeth removed by Dr Chamil and was very impressed by his professionalism and skill! It was pain free and was very helpful with answering any of my questions and always made sure I was okay through the entire process. Fantastic experience: Have been seeing Dr Chamil & his team for the past 4 years - fantastic service. The hygienists are fantastic (see them every 6 months) and Dr Chamil saved me from getting a root canal.

Positive experience: I recently booked in an annual check up, and after rushing from work to get to my appointment, ended up waiting an additional 50 minutes before being seen. When the dentist was finally free they saw me for a total of around 4 minutes, and seemed very rushed, though still very polite and professional. They had a notice up about how their appointments run late, which leads me to believe this is a regular thing. I am understanding of the extra care and time some people may need that means following appointments run late, but 50 minutes wait feels very extreme for a 4 minute appointment that cost me $90 (!!!). Had to reschedule a meeting and make the extra time up after work. Another waiting patient had to arrange someone else to pick their child up from school. I wish they could contact their patients if they know their appointments will be running late so we don't waste so much time out of our day, making our schedule run late as well. Unfortunately will not be returning.

Fantastic experience: I had 3x wisdom teeth extracted by Dr Chamil. He was so warm and welcoming and explained everything that he was doing as he did it! I was extremely nervous as I had a bad experience else where but Dr. Chamil made it a comfortable and relaxing even tho I was having teeth pulled out! Rebekah has also been amazing in helping me with me issues and over thinking with my healing! Just want to thank everyone at sydenham dental!

Fantastic experience: No one ever enjoys going to the dentist and having their brains rattled with the sounds/vibrations of those awful dental drills. I personally can strongly attest to this. Couple that with the bill, it generally is an awful experience. However, I've been here four times now (for check ups, tooth extraction and fillings) and can safely say that it's been wonderful (not the procedures ofc). The dentists, Dr Kevin (no longer working here, sadly) and Dr Chamil, have been very cordial and professional in their service. They stand by their work and are willing to give appropriate check ups. I think the best part is that they're not forceful when advising treatments, assertive when the treatment is urgent, honest when it comes to the prices, and provide comforting/painless treatments (other than the injection of the anesthetic). Along with the warmth of the reception and support team, I am very pleased with the work they've done and are providing. I will definitely be back (hopefully not anytime soon) for further treatments. PS: attached is the picture of my extracted tooth, as a PSA to get your tooth pains checked before it's too late. RIP my under-appreciated molar tooth.

Negative experience: I wish I could just put zero stars I took my partner here to get his two sorted he has come out in more pain than when he went and and he told me they gave him four rounds off injections to numb the mouth but it didnt work then told him he could just go home with antibiotics so he got it wrapped straight out they didn't even do a proper wash out of the mouth wait for the blood to clot his mouth is bleeding a lot I would not recommend this dentist I do not know they are still open

Fantastic experience: Had my tooth filled at this place and it was absolutely wonderful. Reception is being friendly and do care about my body conditions. Huge shout out to doctor Lucy for let me had the most relaxing and painless operation. She also told me all the details about aftercare. Tooth had no problem after the surgery anymore which feels great. Probably gonna be the goto place for me in chch when I get tooth issues.

Fantastic experience: I recently had my first visit to a dentist since I was a child. Had painful childhood dental work, but this was absolutely pain free! It was such a good experience that I would have gone sooner! Excellent service and support from the team there, fantastic dentist - Chamil who I had previously known when he was working as a doctor, and it was fantastic to see his skills this time as a patient. I was very nervous, but Chamil put me at ease, worked at my pace, it was pain free and the work was excellent. Chamil is an extremely skilled, hard working and a lovely person. This was an absolutely great experience! The team worked around my budget and there were many different ways to pay including winz and afterpay. They also were able to fit me in as I needed. I would 100% recommended Sydenham dentists to everyone! It was a breeze!

Negative experience: Was told I needed 7 fillings and 2 of them root canals went too new dentist and that is not the case at all only needed 4 in total and no root canals do not recommend at all be careful...... !!!

Negative experience: Absolutely appalling, as i am a university student I came for my yearly check up here. The dentist looked for about 10 minutes gave me some X-rays and told me i would need 3 fillings in my teeth and told me it would be about $200 per filling. I have never needed a filling before and i take great care of my teeth. After leaving not overly satisfied with the appointment I checked the other reviews and saw others that had been quoted fillings when they were not needed. I emailed a copy of my X-rays to my family member who has 30+ years experience as a dentist and went to another dentist for a check up. Both of these confirmed I did not need any fillings or any work done. I am beyond shocked they are willing to drill into teeth and do dental work on teeth that do not need any work done. Will be lodging a formal complaint aswell but please do not waste your oral health and money with this dentist.

Negative experience: Unfortunately, not a good experience. I started the appointment to the dental nurses coming in and out laughing and joking with the dentist, this was obviously distracting for her as she was performing the examination. The dentist seemed very rushed and rough, not helped by the distractions. The dentist then told me I needed 3 wisdom teeth removed because of decay (costing $700 each!). I asked to see some pictures to confirm. The dentist showed me the images and there was no sign of any decay. I questioned the dentist on this and after a moment of hesitaton she said that the decay was under the surface. I then asked to see the x-ray to confirm this and there was nothing wrong with the teeth, which the dentist confirmed. When I tried to ask why she recommended the extraction, I couldnt get a straight answer. She seemed embarrassed and kept laughing it off and told me that there was "no rush" and it was only her opinion... Seems as though she was trying to make me pay a lot of money for unnecessary treatment and hoped that I wouldn't ask for further explanation. I would encourage any patients to request evidence of the necessity of the treatment before handing over lots of money for something you might not need. Saying this, the reception staff were kind and helpful.

Negative experience: I went there a while back for a checkup and X-Ray just after one of the Covid lockdowns when I couldn't get into my regular dentist and they had a special price on 1st appointments. Had a checkup an X ray with a young Asian female dentist and came back to me and said I needed 4 fillings at a cost of about $240 each. As I wasn't experiencing any discomfort and very suspicious of that I had my paid for "x -rays " emailed to my regular dentist and managed to get in to him a few days later and clearly he said I didn't have " any " fillings required at all to my relief. This dentist still texts me for checkups but as a Chch born and bred person won't be going near there ever again and I tell everyone I know of my experience and how they tried to RIP me off and extort to suffice there costs or the dentists wage packet I am deducing. Totally untrustworthy. Totally untrustworthy.

Fantastic experience: Absolute best dentist I've been to in my life. Went in as a new patient, got checked by liying Jin. I 100% recommend this place. Very thorough and super gentle. They make you feel comfortable and are so kind especially if you're one who has bad anxiety and or fears with needles etc you will feel so comfortable with these guys. They are super welcoming.

Fantastic experience: Going to the dentist can often be a highly stressful and traumatic experience for many people when it comes to taking care of their teeth and gums . This isn't the case with Sydenham dental and their affiliate partner :Duchenne I highly recommend the whole team from Sydenham dental, everyone there is so very helpful and pleasant to interact with. Fantastic experience: I had 3x wisdom teeth extracted by Dr Chamil and can not fault his work. He was so warm and welcoming and explained everything so well prior to and throughout the surgery. He did everything possible to make me comfortable and relaxed. I didn't have any pain during the surgery and he constantly checked with me to make sure of that. The entire team at Sydenham dental were amazing. The receptions were so helpful with all my calls and questions.

Fantastic experience: Have just done a long overdue check up then did a couple of fillings a week after. Both appointments were awesome. Dr Jin and everyone have been super friendly and professional. Dr Jin has been very patient and informative throughout both appointments. She was making sure I knew what was going on along the way. Afterwards, she took the time and effort to answer my questions and gave me many suggestions and advices. :)

Negative experience: Unbelievably Expensive! $600+ for 2 fillings! (New Patient $49) you would think they should be 18ct Gold!! This is the classic example of why people can't afford to go to the dentist! Make sure you ask for a quote first, we rang around and was alot cheaper elsewhere. Fantastic experience: Dr. Chamil and his team won me as a loyal customer the first time I went in. I was nervous and had avoided the dentist for a few years but they made me feel at ease and I have been coming back ever since. With all the work I've had done, they always talk you through the procedure and the costs. I always learn something new each time as Dr. Chamil explains what they are doing as they do it. I would reccomend anyone who wants great service and dentists who know their stuff to pay them a visit.

Negative experience: It’s too expensive. Less than One treatment charge 428$. My teeth cap was off. She clean teeth and put same teeth cap on it. I had no problem before but after this I had problems when I asked about it they ask me contact to speacilist.

Negative experience: Went here as a student, as there was a deal for Ara students for $35 checkup. The appointment was 30 mins late, which was fine, it happens. However, before I went in, I heard the staff talking about how it was meant to be lunchtime but they were running late. When I sat in the chair, the appointment was SUPER QUICK. I was a new patient here, and the dentist took less than 5 minutes during my checkup and did not explain things to me. She said I needed a filling and a hygienist visit and gave me a quote for these services ($350 for these). I left feeling rushed and not cared for, thinking this was related to the fact that they were rushing to get lunch. I ended up booking a checkup at my normal dentist which includes a clean for $118, my normal dentist did not mention any filling needed. Next time, I will stay loyal to my usual and not chase the discount. Did not feel cared for.

Fantastic experience: I've tried many dentists around Christchurch until I found Dr Chamil. He's a first one I fully trust and can recommend his practice to everyone. All the people at the centre are really kind and caring. When I had an emergecy, they manage to accomodate me straight away to ease my pain. Thank you!

Negative experience: Went in there as my regular dentist was busy. Paid for checkup. They gave me a piece of paper which was beyond my understanding and contained the estimate to fix my teeth. The dentist never explained what was wrong with my teeth. I rang the reception and they adviced that I will get a call from the dentist and I did receive a call and they explained about the conditions over the phone when all this could have been done while I was there. Really unprofessional and I will wait for my regular dentist and won't go back to this place.

Fantastic experience: Very happy overall with the level of service by the whole team at Sydenham Dental. Was initially a bit disappointed as I booked in for a check-up, but the person I saw could not provide me with a consultation on my wisdom teeth (which was the main reason I came in), however they were more than happy to provide me with another consultation with Dr Chamil completely free of charge as they understood it was a bit of a mixup and miscommunication on my end. Was a bit nervous about the wisdom teeth extraction, but Dr Chamil was very professional and good at explaining everything prior to and during the procedure which put me at ease. All the staff were very friendly and helpful in general, would definitely recommend this place to anyone. Only downside would be you will likely have to book quite a bit in advance, but I think this is probably a testament to the popularity of the business if anything.

Negative experience: Booked appointment for 12pm got there filled inform and was left there waiting for 25 minutes, when I enquired how much longer as I was on lunch break the receptionist went into the dentist to be told he needs another 10 minutes at which time I walked out... Never had such bad service and disrespect. never going back or recommend to anyone.

Fantastic experience: Chamil is a 10/10 dentist who provided clear information prior to the surgery and made sure the teeth were extracted quickly and painlessly even though the orientation and position of my wisdom teeth made it difficult to extract. After avoiding going to the dentist due to being so fearful of what my wisdom teeth extraction would entail, I feel so silly. Fantastic experience: Had my fillings, root canal, crown and wisdom teeth extraction with Dr Chamil. He’s professional and helpful. Every time he explained to me what the problem of my teeth was and advised me possible solutions which I could decide from by myself. The price is reasonable and they even have payment plans. A big out to the whole team and especially Dr Chamil!

Negative experience: I didn’t like this dental clinic. The dentist was ok but the receptionists were very unhelpful. I tried to claim Southern Cross insurance on the the bill and they even had signs saying they fully support Southern Cross members but they didn’t. I had to pay upfront and claim it myself later. Thankfully it wasn’t a big bill but if it was then I would have been really screwed. Also, they tried to charge me more and I had say something about it before they fixed it. The place is quite old and rundown, the equipment looks like it could be be updated and they had a mouldy ceiling that gave me anxiety in the room I was in. Also they provided no sunglasses like normal dental clinics so I was blinded by the light. Would not recommend this dental clinic unless your tooth is literally falling out and all dental clinics besides this one are closed down.

Fantastic experience: Overall good experience! Suprisingly quick and pain free

Negative experience: Unclear with the service and cost. 2 X-ray and just look at teeth for 49$(NO clean). 130$ extra for clean. Not happy for the cost also misleading information with the service.

Fantastic experience: I was visiting the area when I needed an emergency appointment due to severe toothache. I was thankfully able to get into see Sydenham Dental Centre's Principal Dentist during the recent holiday period. I was a very nervous patient, but he was great and so was his assistant that day. I can honestly say it was one of the best visits I've ever experienced going to a dentist, and I felt no pain. I'm very grateful and thankful for the amazing customer service and support that day, thank you so much!!!

Fantastic experience: I visited Sydenham Dental centre last week and the service provided was way above my expectations. I had an appointment for a root canal treatment booked in with Dr. Chamil Samaranayake and he was very informative and kind the whole time. He explained every process of the root canal treatment and checked up on me every step of the way. The staff at Sydenham Dental centre were supportive and I was taken in on time to the appointment. Thank you very much for your service ! I highly recommend Sydenham Dental centre for anyone who needs any dental treatments !

Fantastic experience: I've been having problems with my teeth for the past 3 years. I've been going to my usual dentist but nothing seemed to do any good. After the 2nd lock down I visited Sydenham dental. The staff was absolutely amazing. They were friendly and very supportive. I got 2 x-rays and a detailed consultation from Chamil. It was a short appointment but he showed me the 2 x-rays on a screen and explained the work that was needed. I ended up getting a full root canal and 2 fillings. One cavity was soo deep that it was almost touching the nerve. However Dr. Chamil was able to detect it just on time and fill it. This would have costed me around $1500 plus in 3 months, but we fixed it with $175. High recommended !!!

Negative experience: Let me begin by saying that everyone at Sydenham dental is very friendly and helpful. I currently attend Ara and was advised to go to Sydenham dental since they offer $35 appointments. As a student, I thought it was a good deal and decided to go. However, I went for a check-up 4-6 weeks later which included an X-ray and around 3-5 minutes for $35, which was extremely annoying because I just wanted to get my teeth cleaned. Afterwards, I rebooked an appointment for the dental hygienist to get them cleaned, and the receptionist told me how great it was that Sydenham offers $35 appointments to ARA students, which is why I chose Sydenham over my usual dentist. After driving 35 minutes into town for the second time to get my teeth cleaned, I wondered what else could go wrong. As a consequence, I went up to pay for my appointment where I was charged $149 for the appointment. Given that I was told that the appointments were only $35 I was very annoyed. I asked if Ara students get a discount and she replied that in order to get a 10% discount it needs to be on treatment $150 or more. My $35 teeth cleaning appointment has now cost me $184 plus around 2 hours of travel time to and from the two appointments. The cost of the cleaning and check-up at my local dentist is only about $65-$70, so I won't be returning.

Negative experience: Incredibly unreliable in communication. Can't be trusted to maintain communication with clients despite promising follow-up, definitely wouldn't trust them to pull out teeth, let alone pay $1500+ for them to do so. Got told at $70, 2 minute consult (even though the dentist had access to my prior x-ray upon referral) that the dentist couldn't do a single thing unless I paid an additional ninety-something dollars. So my visit would've been literally worthless if I didn't pay extra money. No transparency in booking, despite them contacting me first as the referral had been sent to them. Had to call three times to get follow-up information for referrals and results. First time to get a referral, promised a response the next day. Took a week (and a phone call from me) to get it through. Then no response about my specialist x-ray even after four weeks, a phone call from me and a promise to get back to me the next day. Of course I didn't hear back. Then asking for my information to pass on to a new dentist, apparently you don't have access to my ICAT results and I have to go on another mission to get them. I don't see the point in coming back when I'm apparently doing more work for my $1500+ surgery than anyone who actually works there. The whole ordeal has left a very bad taste in my mouth (pun intended).

Fantastic experience: Had my teeth clean up with hygienist Dr. Farida. Amazing service as you expect from professionals. A bit expensive but its worth paying for your teeth hygiene (if you don't wanna loose your tooth early)

Fantastic experience: They were so kind and did a great job with a consultation and ultimately removing my wisdom teeth. I had almost no pain after getting them removed which is incredible. Highly recommend them.

Fantastic experience: I hadn't been to a dentist in years. The team were easy to deal from a checkup and xrays, professional and gave me up to date information, I ended up having 2 partial dentures after having teeth pulled. They taking a bit of getting use to but looking forward to getting the stainless dentures after Christmas.

Fantastic experience: I had all my four wisdom teeth removed by Dr Liying and the team. The process went very smoothly, with as little discomfort as possible. The team are very friendly and professional and I'm stroked to found a dentist I finally trust and enjoy going to.

Negative experience: I wish it was possible to give zero stars but I can't. The dentist I saw was very rude and unhelpful and quite frankly uncaring. Affordable dental care, what a joke. $144 for pretty much zero professional service or clarity. Luckily we have many other dentists that are actually competent

Fantastic experience: Highly recommended! I had my teeth checked and cleaned, great service by Dr. Jeff and oral hygienist Dr. Farida. The prices are reasonable. Statements and recommendations dentists gave me are very helpful and informative. Plus great customer service from receptionist Chelsea, she always smiles, happy to help, very polite and accommodating.

Fantastic experience: I came here thru a grab one voucher for an exam and xrays but I will be returning because of the service. I had a comprehensive clean booked 6months later and forgot I had to get a filling too, which has always been a very anxious experience for me. Lizzie and her assistant with the wonderful eyebrows (sorry I don't know her name!) were so kind and caring throughout the procedure. And best of all I didn't feel any pain. I'm not sure what the extra discount I received when I went to pay was for but I felt it was very good value. I will make this my regular dentist in future.

Fantastic experience: I had my two impacted wisdom teeth removed on 1st June and because due to its anatomy , Dr. Chamil had explained the risks of temporary to permanent numbness, I was so anxious! Dr. Chamil and his staff were very professional and highly skilled. They made the procedure very smooth. Two weeks after the surgery, I didn’t feel any numbness despite having the risk of damaging the nerve. I would definitely recommend the team!
